VOX POPULI: Kan and Ozawa's cronies should fight it out

今年の漢字が「暑」と聞いての反応は、ほぼ「そうそう暑かったよね」だった。肌の感覚は思い出に早変わりし、明日はもう冬至である。変調や波乱はあっても季節は巡るのに、とんと回らぬのが民主党だ▼

Upon hearing that the kanji character chosen by the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation to represent 2010 was "sho" (hot), most people simply said, "It was hot, wasn't it?" That physical sensation has quickly become a memory. Wednesday is the winter solstice.
The seasons come and go, regardless of the vicissitudes and turbulences of our lives, but what remains unchanged is the Democratic Party of Japan.

听到今年的汉字是“暑”（天热）之后的反应大致是“是啊是啊，是挺热的”。切身感受转眼已成追忆，明天就是冬至了。即使有异常或波动，季节还是照常运转，但是死不回头的是民主党。


炎夏の終わり、小欄で何度か「民主の森」の話を書いた。菅首相を森の主カブトムシに、朽ち木の洞（うろ）からニラミを利かす小沢元代表をオオクワガタに見立ててのメルヘンだ。秋の代表選はカブトの辛勝に終わり、森は平和裏に団結……かと思いきや、季節外れの虫合戦となった▼

Toward the end of an intensely hot summer, I wrote about "the DPJ forest" in this column on a number of occasions. I likened Prime Minister Naoto Kan to a "kabutomushi" (Japanese rhinoceros beetle), the king of the forest, and former DPJ President Ichiro Ozawa to an "okuwagata" (large stag beetle), which wields its power from the hollow of a dead tree. The presidential election in autumn ended in a narrow victory for the kabutomushi. The inhabitants of the forest were supposed to come together again in peace once the race was over. Now, an unseasonal row between the beetles has flared up again.


炎夏之终，本栏几度写到“民主森林”的故事。那是将菅首相看作森林之主－－独角仙、将从朽木洞中注视着一举一动的原代表小泽看作大锹的童话故事。秋天的代表选举以独角仙的险胜告终，森林里一团和气……不料演变成过季的昆虫大战。


強制起訴される資金問題を国会で説明しない小沢氏に、業を煮やした菅首相が自ら説得を試みた。カナブンやら何やら、取り巻きを外しての直談判も実らず、小沢氏はあっさり突っぱねた▼

Ozawa refuses to appear before the Diet to explain his connection to a political funding scandal. That has led to calls for Ozawa to be forced to appear. Prime Minister Kan, having lost his patience, personally met Ozawa in an attempt to talk him into making an appearance before the Lower House Deliberative Council on Political Ethics. The tete-a-tete excluded Ozawa's cronies, who act like "kanabun" drone beetles. However, Ozawa flatly turned down Kan's request.


小泽氏不肯在国会中说明被强制起诉的资金问题，菅首相对其大为恼火，试图亲自说服。拨开铜花金龟等喽啰直接交涉也无果，被小泽氏一口回绝。


カブトムシはひと夏限りの命だが、オオクワガタは絶滅危惧種の粘りかどうか、軽く越冬する。小沢氏も、昔ながらの手法を批判されながら何度も冬をしのいできた。今度もカブトの退場をじっと待つ腹らしい▼

While the kabutomushi has a short lifespan and does not live beyond the summer, the okuwagata, an endangered species, is more tenacious. It can easily make it through the winter. Ozawa, too, has survived winter after winter dodging criticism for his old-style political methods. This time, too, he appears set to patiently wait for the kabutomushi to step down.


独角仙命只一夏，而大锹不知是由于濒危物种的顽强还是咋的，能轻易越冬。小泽氏一如往昔的手法虽屡遭诟病，但也几度熬过冬天。这次似乎又准备静待独角仙的退场了。


課題山積の中の党内抗争だ。柚湯（ゆずゆ）と南瓜（かぼちゃ）で無病息災を祈るべき寒天下に、プールで西瓜（すいか）をほおばるかの浮世離れ。とはいえ、脱小沢×親小沢の対立軸をいっぺん折らねば、日本の政治は前に進むまい。どうせ戦うならとことん、しかしさっさとお願いする▼

The DPJ is riven by internal strife at a time when the nation is facing a mountain of problems. In the middle of the winter, when the Japanese people traditionally pray for good health by taking "yuzu" citrus baths and eating pumpkins, the DPJ is so out of touch with the public that it seems to be digging into a watermelon by a swimming pool.
Without overcoming the deadlock between pro- and anti-Ozawa groups, Japanese politics cannot move forward. If they are going to clash, I want them to fight it out and get this over with as quickly as possible.

问题如山中的党内抗争。在本该用柚子浴和南瓜来祈求无病无灾的数九寒天中，却好像在游泳池中大嚼西瓜似的，独与世乖。话虽如此，如果不毅然斩断脱小泽×亲小泽的对立轴，日本的政治就不会前进。如果非战不可，就请彻底迅速。


一年で昼が最も短い冬至。ここからは日が長くなる一方ということで、一陽来復の語がある。すなわち、陰極まって陽戻る。太陽が元気を盛り返すように国政も、と願わずにはいられない。熱いならまだしも、政治がのべつ暑苦しいのはつらい。

The winter solstice is the time of year when the days are shortest. From now on, the days will get longer. And, as the sun regains its power, I want politics to get lively again. The confrontations may heat up, but this stifling politics is unbearable.

冬至在一年中白天最短。从此日长一日，有一个词叫“一阳来复”。即，阴极而阳返。切盼国政亦如太阳恢复元气那样。如果是天热还则罢了，政治持续酷暑可就吃不消了。
