1 〈いかにも, まったく〉
文例
どうもよく降るねえ. How it rains!
どうも英語はむずかしい. English is really very difficult for me to learn.
2 〈あいさつに〉
文例
この間はどうも. Thank you for [what you did] the other day.
どうもありがとう. Thank you very much. / Thanks a lot.
かばんをお持ちしましょう.―やあ, どうもすみません. Let me carry your bag.―Oh, thank you.
3 〈どうやら〉
文例
どうもあいつのしわざらしい. It does seem to be his doing. / It appears that he did it.
どうも見たことのある人だと思った. I was sure I had met him somewhere before.
彼はどうもうそをついているのではないかと思う. I’m afraid that he is lying.
4 〈どうしても〉
文例
彼の言うことはどうも信じられない. I can’t bring myself to believe what he says.
どうもそんなふうに思われて仕方がないんです. I don’t know why, but I can’t help thinking that way.

1 〈まったく〉 quite; utterly; absolutely
句例
とても…ない by no means; not at all; not…possibly; hardly; not nearly 《so…as》
とても助からない cannot possibly be saved; be past all help; be quite beyond recovery
とてもかなわない be no match 《for》; 《形式》 be far [decidedly] inferior 《to》

とても望みはない. There is no hope at all.
そんなことはとても期待できない. Such a thing is hardly to be expected.
とてもそんな大金は持ったこともありません. I have never had such a large amount of money in my whole life.

2 〈非常に〉 very; 《形式》 exceedingly; awfully; terribly; badly
文例
庭で働くのがとても楽しい. Working in the garden gives me a lot of pleasure.
彼はとてもいい人ですよ. He is such a nice [good] man.
彼はとても金に困っていた. He was badly in need of money.
とても金がかかった. It cost me a lot [no end] of money.
