1. emphasis (n.)
emphasize (v.)
means "put stress on something" (強調,著重)
e.g. Miss Chan puts much emphasis on accuracy of grammar when she marks the essay.
e.g. Miss Chan emphasizes the importance of grammr.
2. empty (adj.) - containing nothing
vacant (adj.) - not occupied
e.g. The bottle is empty.
e.g. We looked for a vacant seat in the library.
呢兩個字比較容易混淆,兩個字既中文解釋都係"空"
但係vacant呢個字係有一種"安置"既意思係度
3. every day
everyday (adj.)
I think most of you know how to use "every day" so i m not going to explain it for you.
e.g. Calling up customers is his everyday duty.
4. fare
fee
Both of them contain the meaning of money.
However, we usually use fee for some pofessionl servises. e.g. school fee
most likey fare follows with transportation. e.g. transportation fare
5. few
a few
a few = some > few
few means the quantity is nearly zero.
6.hard
hardly
you may always misunderstand "hardly" is the adverb of "hard".
In fact the meanings of them are totally different.
hardly means "not" or "almost not".
e.g. I have hardly any money left.
7. late
lately
lately means recently.
It doesn't contain a meaning of "late"
e.g. He has been late for the meeting lately.
On the above sentence,"lately" is used to describe "meeting". |
