我刚把今天的翻译完毕，虽然粗糙了点，大家一起探讨吧。

   卓别林拍摄的第一部有声电影是1940年（昭和15年）的《大独裁者》。这部电影作品敢于向当时只手遮天的希特勒公然挑战，被誉为深刻洞察时代的电影杰作中的杰作。▼在此之前据说他专注于拍摄无声电影，可是他与之对决的独裁者希特勒，却是个巧舌如簧、擅长蛊惑人心之徒。卓别林认为自己的电影如果没有声音，就没法与之相抗衡。电影结尾他那段充满人文精神的演讲非常著名，很多人认为这是电影史上最让人感动的一段台词。▼北非国家突尼斯的长期独裁统治终于崩溃了。这是个靠强大的警察组织来钳制言论自由的国家。打破这种钳制的似乎应该是互联网。在这种用以对抗极权统治的沟通方式中，再加上卓别林曾倚重过的语言的力量。▼虽然时代和背景并不相同，这两种力量加在一起却能成为个人与统治者对峙的神兵利器。在突尼斯，用手机拍摄下来的抗议示威视频，以及举行下一次示威的号召在网上不断传播，动员了广大市民。对互联网的巨大威力，天堂里的喜剧之王也应会羡慕的吧。▼以突尼斯的国花将此次政变命名为“茉莉花革命”。突尼斯周边还有很多类似的强权统治国家。听说因为担心民主化运动的多米诺效应，有的统治者对飘散过来的“茉莉花香”不敢掉以轻心。▼卓别林在电影中的演讲中这样呼吁：“飞机和广播拉近了我们之间的距离，让我们在民主主义的旗帜下团结起来吧。”当今已是一个互联网可以瞬间连接世界各地的时代。虽然也知道互联网是把“双刃剑”，也能让我们看到走向更美好新世界的希望。

　Soldiers! Don't give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you and enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate, only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural!
　Soldiers! Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St Luke, it is written the kingdom of God is within man not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful - to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security.
　By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason - a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us unite!

VOX POPULI: Chaplin may have envied power of the Internet

"The Great Dictator," the first talkie made by Charles Chaplin (1889-1977), heroically satirized Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), who was at the height of his power.

The 1940 film, known for its profound insight into that era, is regarded as one of the greatest pictures of all times.

Up to then, Chaplin is said to have preferred specializing in silent films. But the dictator he faced up to was a sensationalist who manipulated words to incite people.

Without speaking words himself, there was probably no way Chaplin could have risen to confront the leader of Nazi Germany. His speech brimming with humanism delivered at the end of the film is well known. In fact, many people call it the most moving lines in the history of film.

The dictatorial regime that had long ruled the North African nation of Tunisia has collapsed. Tunisia is a country where free speech has been strictly controlled through strong police powers.

I hear it was the Internet that helped topple the dictatorship. I find something in common between the modern tool of communication that resisted authoritarianism and the talking film that Chaplin relied upon to take on Hitler.

While the times and backgrounds are different, they are both tools that give individuals a means to confront powerful figures.

In Tunisia, images of protests taken by cellphone cameras and calls to organize demonstrations spread over the Internet and mobilized citizens.

Perhaps the "King of Comedy" would be envious of the power of the Internet if he knew it.

The coup in Tunisia was named the "Jasmine Revolution," because of the flower that adorns the country.

There are many similar authoritarian regimes in the region.

I hear some dictators are getting increasingly restless, fearing the pro-democracy movement could cause a domino effect in nearby countries.

In Chaplain's famous movie speech, he says: "The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. In the name of democracy, . . . let us all unite."

We live in an age in which the Internet instantly links the world.

While I am aware how it can be "a double-edged sword," I hope that it will help realize a better world.
