スポーツと観衆について、一つの「法則」があるそうだ。勝者が得るものと敗者の失うものの差が大きいほど興奮は増す、のだという。人気チームの戦いも、親善試合では盛り上がらない。
关于体育比赛和观众，据说是有一条“法则”的。优胜者所得到的东西与失败者所失去的东西的差别越大，则兴奋程度越高。所以，即便是有名的球队，在进行友谊时，观众也沸腾不起来的。
激しい一騎打ちが続く米民主党の大統領候補者選びで、勝ちと負けの落差は「雲と泥」である。米国民は盛り上がらずにはいられまい。渾身（こんしん）の腕相撲を伝えるような報道は、太平洋のこちら側でさえ、連日引きも切らない。
还在单挑着的美国民主党总统侯选人提名战，最后的胜者与败者间的落差将是“天壤之别”。美国国民自然没法不沸腾了。就连太平洋的这一边，像是转播拼着命掰腕子似的，连日来报道也是络绎不绝。
オバマ氏の勢いに、一時、ヒラリー・クリントン氏の手はつきかけた。しかし先週、「残り１センチ」から五分に戻した。理由が様々に分析された中、「もっと勝負を楽しみたい」という有権者の気分を誰かが指摘していた。まだどちらも負かしたくないのだろう、と。
希拉利•克林顿的手曾一度触及了奥巴马的强势。然而，在上周，又从离胜出“还剩1公分”回到了平分秋色的状态。个中缘由也是众说纷纭，有人对选民的那种“想看更激烈的对决”的心态进行了指责。说他们还不想让谁出局。
盛り返したものの、彼女の泣きどころは、やはり「ヒラリー嫌い」の多さだろう。嫌われる理由を、「女だからか。それとも、ああいう女だからか」とあげつらわれる。大統領になれば「好き」と「嫌い」で社会が分裂しかねない、などと負のイメージが足を引っ張る。
尽管已经东山再起，可她的软肋还在于“讨厌希拉利”的人较多吧。而讨人嫌的理由，一般认为是“因为她是个女人。或者，因为是个那样的女人”。一种她若当上总统社会将分裂为“喜欢”和“讨厌”两块的负面印象，在拖她的后腿。
米国人は過去の大統領の品定めが好きだ。多くが最高と認めるのが南北戦争時のリンカーンである。伝説的な雄弁に加え、国家分裂の危機を救ったからだ。多民族の国ゆえに、「一つのアメリカ」という言葉は日本人の想像をこえて重い。
美国人喜欢评论以往的总统。大部分人都认为南北战争时的林肯是最伟大的。除了为人津津乐道雄辩，还因为他在有分裂的危机前挽救了国家。正因为那是个多民族的国家，所以他那“一个美国”的观念所具有的分量，是日本人所难以想象的。
勝負の分かれ目は「心の準備」だとも言われる。女性と黒人。どちらを大統領に迎える心の準備が、米社会に早く整うか。民主主義の守護者を自任する国での、思えば歴史的な戦いである。
也有人说胜负的关键，在于是否具备“心理准备”。女性还是黑人。到底将哪一位奉为总统的心理准备，美国社会会很快就具备吗？这在这个自命为民主的守护者的国家，想来也是个历史性的挑战。

According to a certain "law" that applies to spectator sports, the wider the gap between what a winner stands to win and what a loser stands to lose, the more exciting the game.
By the same token, a friendship match doesn't drum up much excitement, even if it is between two popular teams.
In the cutthroat, one-on-one U.S. Democratic presidential primaries, winning or losing makes all the difference. Even on this side of the Pacific, we see report after report on this duel. In my mind, I see the two candidates arm-wrestling with all their might.
Illinois Senator Barack Obama's winning streak in February made it look as if he was forcing New York Senator Hillary Clinton's arm back to mere centimeters from the table.
But Clinton snapped out of her losing streak last Tuesday, and she seems to have recovered ground. Now the two are virtually tied.
Pundits are offering all sorts of analyses to explain this shift in momentum. One person has pointed out that voters apparently want to "keep enjoying the match" because they don't want either candidate to lose yet.
Although Clinton has recouped, her toughest challenge still seems to be the fact that many Americans just don't like her. Speculation is rife about why that is. Some say it's because of her gender, while others argue she is unlikable because of the type of woman she is.
Her negative image continues to dog her, so much so that, should she become president, she may end up dividing the nation along the line of those who like her and those who can't stand her.
Americans like rating their past presidents. Abraham Lincoln, who was in power during the Civil War era, has the most votes for the best past president.
In addition to his legendary oratorical eloquence, Lincoln is credited with saving the union from disintegration.
The concept of "one America" means far more to the multiethnic United States than we Japanese can ever imagine.
The decisive factor in the Obama-Clinton duel will reportedly be whether the American people are more ready for an African-American president than they are for a woman president, or vice versa.
Which will U.S. society accept first?
The world is watching this historic battle in the country that calls itself the defender of democracy.
