  Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.



Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.



Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.



Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.



When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

青春とは人生のある期間ではなく、心の持ちかたを言う。薔薇の面差し、紅の唇、しなやかな肢体ではなく、たくましい意志、ゆたかな想像力、炎える情熱をさす。青春とは人生の深い泉の清新さをいう。

青春とほ怯懦を退ける勇気、安易を振り捨てる冒険心を意味する。ときには、20歳の青年よりも60歳の人に青春がある。年を重ねただけで人は老いない。理想を失うとき初めて老いる。

歳月は皮膚にしわを増すが、情熱を失えば心はしぼむ。苦悩・恐怖・失望により気力は地に這い、精神は芥になる。

60歳であろうと16歳であろうと人の胸には、驚異に魅かれる心、おさな児のような未知への探求心、人生への興味の歓喜がある。君にも吾にも見えざる駅逓が心にある。人から神から美・希望・喜悦・勇気・力の霊感を受ける限り君は若い。

霊感が絶え、精神が皮膚の雪におおわれ、悲歎の氷にとざされるとき、20歳であろうと人は老いる。頭 を高く上げ希望の波をとらえる限り、80歳であろうと人は青春にして已む。

サムエル・ウルマン：1840年4月13日生まれのドイツ人。
この詩は1920年4月、80歳の誕生日に当たって家族がウルマンの詩集「80年の歳月の項から」を出版、その中の一つとして収録されている。

この詩は、「東洋紡会長の宇野収」「電力の鬼と言われた松永安左エ門」「松下電器産業の松下幸之助」「トヨタ自動車販売会長の加藤罩�」「トヨタ自動車工業の会長の石田退三」「新日本製鐵会長の武田豊」「マッカーサー元帥」「デール・カーネギー」など、多くの著名人が愛した。

青春とは人生のある期間を言うのではなく、心の様相ようそうを言うのだ。優れた創造力、逞しき意志、炎ゆる情熱、怯懦きょうだを却ける勇猛心、安易を振り捨てる冒険心、こう言う様相を青春と言うのだ。

年を重ねただけで人は老いない。理想を失うときに初めて老いが来る。歳月は皮膚のしわを増すが、情熱を失う時に精神はしぼむ。

苦悶や狐疑こぎや、不安、恐怖、失望、こう言うものこそ恰あたかも長年月の如く人を老いさせ、精気ある魂をも芥あくたに帰せしめてしまう。

年は七十であろうと十六であろうと、その胸中に抱き得るものは何か。

曰く、驚異への愛慕心、空にきらめく星辰、その輝きにも似たる事物や思想に対する欽仰、事に処する剛毅な挑戦、小児の如く求めて止まぬ探求心、人生への歓喜と興味。人は信念と共に若く　疑惑と共に老ゆる、人は自信と共に若く　恐怖と共に老ゆる、希望ある限り若く、失望と共に老い朽ちる。

大地より、神より、人より、美と喜悦、勇気と壮大、そして偉力の霊感を受ける限り、人の若さは失われない。　これらの霊感が絶え、悲嘆の白雪が人の心の奥までも蔽いつくし、皮肉の厚氷あつごおりがこれを堅くとざすに至れば、この時にこそ人は全く老いて、神の憐れみを乞うる他はなくなる。
