原文没什么问题。

it didn‘t take long before 就是在变成某个状态之前没有花费很长时间。
following the lead of its home town 这里的home down指New York，因为前文说了纽约正在变成the world's greatest city,那么following the lead of its home town 说的就是在New York City不断发展的带动之下。。。

没问题啊，英文中经常有这种故意干扰思维连续性的成分----following the lead of its home town

抽掉这部分干扰内容，简单来看，句子就是：It didn't take long before the Westminster Kennel Club would be on its way to becoming the world's greatest dog show.

It didn't take long before可以解释成“不久”，following the lead of its home town就是“紧随家乡”
