VOX POPULI: A strong resolve beats a cold winter morning

たとえば漱石を読むと、東京の冬は当時かなり寒かったことがうかがえる。身辺を描いた小品によれば、ある朝、風呂場は氷でかちかち光っている。水道も凍りつき、温水をかけてやっと使えている。いまは屋外も凍ることはまれだ▼

From what I can gather from some of the works by novelist Soseki Natsume (1867-1916), winters in Tokyo were colder in his time than today. In a short piece depicting his daily life, for instance, he recounted how he woke up one morning to find his bathroom iced over. The water pipe was frozen, and Soseki had to thaw it with warm water. Nowadays, it is rare for even the outside to freeze up.

读例如夏目漱石的作品，就能窥见东京的冬天当时相当寒冷。他的一篇描写身边琐事的小品文上写道：一天早晨，浴池让冰冻得硬梆梆的，闪闪发光。自来水也冻住了，浇上热水，才勉强能用了。现在连屋外都很少结冰了。


小説「二百十日」にも寒い朝のくだりがある。〈布団のなかで世の中の寒さを一二（いちに）寸の厚さに遮（さえ）ぎって……〉は言い得て妙だ。そして夜具の中で海老（えび）のように丸くなる。寒い朝の布団の内と外に、極楽と地獄の隔たりを思う人は、今も少なくないだろう▼

His novel, "Nihyaku Toka" (The 210th day), also contains a telling passage about how one feels on a cold winter morning. "Lying in bed, blocking the frigid world down to a thickness of 1 or 2 'sun' (3- to 6-centimeter) layer (of bedcovers) ..."
Even today, I'm sure many people acutely feel the difference between paradise and hell as they curl up like shrimp under the covers on a frigid winter morning.

小说《二百一十日》中也有一节描写寒冷的早晨：“在被窝中将世间的寒冷拒之于一二寸的厚度之外……”，深得语言之妙。然后在被褥中，像虾一样缩成一团。寒冷的早晨，被窝内外宛如天堂地狱之隔，这样觉得的人如今恐怕也不在少数吧。


その極楽から、地獄ならぬ現実へ。冬の朝、目覚めてから布団を抜け出るまでの平均は１３分余りという数字を、気象情報会社「ウェザーニューズ」が算出した。全国１万１千人のアンケート回答をもとに集計したそうだ▼

Weathernews Inc. recently reported that during winter, people take an average of 13 minutes from the time they wake until they haul themselves out of bed. To compile this report, the company asked 11,000 people around the nation to answer a questionnaire. I had thought "five more minutes" was the usual reprieve that most people beg for, but apparently people these days are giving themselves a much more lenient and better deal.

从那个天堂，到并非地狱的现实。冬天的早晨，从醒来到钻出被窝，平均13分钟多，这一数字是气象信息公司－－“天气新闻”算出来的。据说是根据全国１万１千人对问卷调查的回答统计的。


寝起きの抵抗といえば「あと５分」が定番だが、実際はだいぶ長いようだ。とはいえ、最後にはいやが応でも起きなくてはならない。時間を切られたシンデレラだからこそ布団は至福のぬくもりとなる。この値千金（あたいせんきん）感、くやしいが休みの朝では味わえない▼

Still, there is no avoiding the labored rise from the bed in the end. Like with Cinderella, who knew her magical hours had expired, there is an awareness of a "deadline" that makes the warm bed a total bliss.
Ironically, when we can stay in bed as long as we want on a nonworking day, we don't really get that magical feeling.

提起不愿起床，常说“再过5分钟”，实际上好像长很多。话虽如此，最后不管是否愿意，都得起来。正因为是时间被限定的灰姑娘，所以被窝的温暖成了无上的幸福。这种值千金之感，可惜在假日的早晨不能品味。


おそらく漱石の時代と変わらないのは、布団を出るのに一番必要なのは「気合」という点だろう。最多の５６％が答えたそうだ。２位は「部屋を暖める」の３３％。こちらは火鉢の昔よりずいぶん楽になった▼

What probably hasn't changed since Soseki's time is that "sheer resolve" is what one needs most to crawl out of the covers on a cold winter morning. This, at least, is what the most number of respondents--56 percent--thought in the Weathernews survey.
The next necessary thing, according to 33 percent, is "a warmed-up room to wake up to." On this point, life has become a great deal easier since the days when a charcoal-burning brazier was the only source of heat in the room.

恐怕与夏目漱石的时代没有两样的一点是，出被窝最需要“一鼓作气”。据说56％如此回答，最多。第2位是“加热房间”，占33%。这比昔日用火盆容易多了。


今年も大詰めの日々となり、寒波の到来で北国は大雪が続く。夏の猛暑と相殺してほしいが天の采配はままならない。〈冬は又（また）夏がましじやと言ひにけり〉は江戸期の鬼貫。寒さ対策と雪への備えを、どうぞ怠りなく。

With only a few days left until the year-end, a severe cold wave is dumping heavy snow on northern Japan. Obviously, the gods have their own ideas about how to balance summer's brutal heat with winter's arctic chills.
A haiku by the Edo Period (1603-1867) poet Onitsura (1661-1738) goes: "Summer is better/ Or so we say in winter."
I hope everyone is well prepared for the cold and the snow.

今年也只剩下最后几天了，由于寒流的到来，北国持续大雪。本想与夏天的酷暑抵销，但是天不遂人愿。“每到冬日时，又说夏日好”，江户期的鬼贯写道。防寒备雪，万勿懈怠。

雑節の一つ。立春から210日目の日（現行暦では９月１，２日）。台風の襲来する季節で，稲の開花期に当たるため，220日目の二百二十日とともに厄日とされ，風害を免れるよう祈願して，神社などで風祭(かざまつり)をする所も多い。
