VOX POPULI: Venus probe challenge was worth the risk

ヒマラヤの未踏峰だったマナスル（８１６３メートル）には日本人が世界で初めて登頂した。８千メートル峰をめざす計画は、戦後まもなく今西錦司氏ら京大グループが着手した。目標を決めるのに若手が資料を集めた▼

A Japanese party was the first to scale Manaslu, an 8,163-meter peak in the Nepalese Himalayas. Shortly after World War II, a Kyoto University team led by Kinji Imanishi (1902-1992) launched a plan for Japanese alpinists to conquer an 8,000-meter-class mountain, and younger team members were tasked with gathering information on possible targets.

日本人在世界上首次登上了喜马拉雅山的处女峰－－马纳斯卢峰（8163米）。战后不久，今西锦司等京都大学登山队员们就着手制定攀登8千米高峰的计划。为了锁定目标，青年们收集了资料。


マナスルは資料がなかった。写真もなく、山の形さえわからない。だが今西はマナスルを選ぶ。若手らが「この山は何もわからへんのに。あきませんよ」と驚くと、こう言ったそうだ。「わからへんから、やるんや」▼

Imanishi picked Manaslu, even though next to nothing was known about it at the time. No photographs existed, and nobody even knew what the peak looked like. So, Imanishi's decision was met with surprise and opposition by his team. "It's a bad choice," they protested. "We don't know anything about this mountain." But Imanishi responded, "That's exactly why we are going for it."

马纳斯卢峰没有资料。照片也没有，连山的形状都不得而知。但是今西选择了马纳斯卢峰。青年们惊讶地说：“对这个山咱们可是一无所知呀。不行吧。”据说今西答道：“正因为一无所知，所以才要登啊。”


伝説ともいえる逸話は、登山に限らず「開拓者魂」というものをよく表していよう。とはいえ未知の領域を手探りで進む難路は並ではない。金星軌道に入り損なった探査機「あかつき」も、その困難に跳ね返されたといえる。成功の栄誉と失敗のリスクは、当然ながら正比例する▼

This legendary episode illustrates what it takes to be a pioneer in any field. The challenge of venturing into uncharted territory is daunting at best. We could perhaps say the challenge proved too much for Akatsuki, Japan's first Venus probe, which failed earlier this month to enter the planet's orbit. In any pioneering endeavor, the glory of success is in direct proportion to the risk of failure.

近乎传说的逸闻很好地表现了所谓的“开拓者精神”，这不限于登山。话虽如此，探索未知领域的险途却非同小可。未能进入金星轨道的探测器“晓”号可说也被其困难挫败。成功的荣誉和失败的风险当然成正比。


かけた費用は２５０億円。巨額を無駄にしたのか、せめて将来への糧にできるのかは、今後の宇宙航空研究開発機構しだいとなろう。国の台所がきしむ時代、この手の予算は微妙な世論の背中に乗っている▼

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has spent 25 billion yen ($298 million) on this Venus probe. Whether we should write off this project as a waste of money or see it as a costly but necessary investment in the future of Japan's space exploration will depend on how JAXA deals with this setback. However, given the nation's present fiscal straits, public opinion could sway either way.

耗资250亿日元。是让巨额资金付诸东流，还是至少能够作为将来的前车之鉴，则要看今后航天研究开发机构如何应对了。在国家财政窘迫的时代，这种预算处在微妙的舆论的风头浪尖。


ずいぶん前になるが、ねむの木学園の宮城まり子さんにこんな話を聞いた。「ロケット打ち上げに失敗した時、記者さんから電話があったの。『膨大な浪費をするなら福祉に使って』と談話を取りたかったらしいのよ。私が『チャレンジに失敗はつきもの。冒険心を無くさないで』って言ったら、その人、困っちゃって」▼

Mariko Miyagi runs Nemunoki Gakuen, a welfare facility for disabled children. She told me years ago: "When a rocket launch failed, a newspaper reporter phoned me for a comment. I could tell he wanted me to say something like, 'If the government has such an astronomical sum of money to throw away, I'd like to see it spent on welfare.' But I said instead, 'You can't take up a challenge and not risk failure. I don't want anyone to stop trying something new.' The reporter didn't know what to say to that."

老早以前的事儿了，从合欢树儿童福利院（ねむの木学園）的宫城Mari子女士那里听到这么一个故事。“火箭发射失败时，一位记者打来电话。好像想让我说‘浪费庞大的资金，还不如用于福利事业。’我说：‘挑战就会有失败。不要丧失冒险精神。’结果那人很不好意思。”


台所は厳しいが、開拓者魂への応援旗は掲げ続けたい。太陽系大航海がうたわれる時代。長い目を持たずには見えないものが、あるに違いない。

Our country is struggling financially, but I for one would like to keep rooting for people with a pioneering spirit. Ours is an Age of Discovery of the solar system. I am sure there are things that can be seen only with a steady eye for the future.

财政是很严峻，但是应该继续高举大旗为开拓者精神助威。被讴歌为太阳系大航海的时代。肯定不乏没有长远眼光则看不到的东西。
