make the best of (a bad job)=obtain the best result possible in difficult circumstances, compromise在不利的情况下尽力而为;以随遇而安的态度对待不利情况
It started to rain so we couldn't have a picnic, but we made the best of a bad job and went for a walk anyway.

past it/past one’s best = too old (for a particular activity)(就某一活动而言)上了年纪;失去了原有的技能[精力]
He’s past it. He can’t keep swimming for more than an hour any more.
