at an awkward age = at any difficult stage of life, usually adolescence or the menopause处于将近成年的时期，未成熟的青春期或更年期
He’s at that awkward age always hanging around on street corners.
他正处于将成年未成年的时期，老是在街头巷尾闲荡。

My mother has become very moody – but she’s at an awkward age.
我母亲变得喜怒无常-不过她正处于更年期。
come of age = reach the age of being legally responsible for one’s actions(eighteen years for most purposes in Britain)成年，到达法定年龄（在英国大多数为18岁）
She signed her own hire purchase agreement now that she’s come of age.
因为她已到法定年龄，她自己在分期付款购买契约上签了字。

He’s nearly seventy, but doesn’t look his age.

of tender age/years = young/immature幼年，童年，未成年
She is still of tender age and much too young to get engaged.
她还未成年，离订婚年纪还太远。

under age = below a legally required age未到法定年龄
He started drinking in pubs when he was still under age.
他还未到法定年龄时，就开始在酒店喝酒。

↑ the engineer（工程师？） had got important things to do.
这里用过去完成时比较好一点

我在网上查了一下：这是个时态一致的问题

★ 如果从句所叙述的为真理或不变的事实，则永远用现在时。
At that time, people did not know that the earth moves.
He told me last week that he is eighteen.

所以还是用现在时的吧
