(car) boot sale = sale of small secondhand items that the sellers take in the boots of their cars出售(一般放在汽车后部的)行李箱内的旧的小玩意儿
I bought an old box camera for fifty pence at a car boot sale.
我花了50便士在汽车行李箱出售处买了一架旧的方镜箱照相机。

(tough as) old boots = resilient and hard to harm坚韧顽强,能吃苦耐劳
Freda won’t mind the cold weather; she’s as tough as old boots.
弗丽达不在乎天气寒冷,她坚韧顽强,能吃苦耐劳。

die with one’s boots on = die at work工作时死去
He had a massive heart attack in the office and died with his boots on.
他在办公时因大面积心力衰竭而逝世。

hang up one’s boots = retire(足球运动员)挂靴
Jim’s nearly seventy and it’s about time he hung up his boots.
吉姆已年近70,该退休了。

have one’s heart sink into one’s boots = be in despair/dismay吓得要命;焦急万分
When I saw all the mess I had to clear up my heart sank into my boots.
当我看到我得收拾的一片混乱时,我绝望了。

lick somebody’s boots/shoes = fawn, flatter somebody for personal gain<口>巴结某人,奉承某人
I wish he wouldn't lick the manager’s boots; it’s obvious he’s just seeking favors.
他希望他不要巴结经理,显而易见他只是在拍马屁。

like old boots = vigorously<俚>拼命地
She was working like old boots ot finish the task before the end of the day.
她在竭尽全力拼命干,想在一天内完成任务。

order of the boot = sack (from a job)解雇
He came back drunk after lunch so the boss gave him the order of the boot.
午饭后,他喝得醉醺醺地回来,因此老板解雇了他。

pull oneself up by one’s bootstraps = make a conscious effort to improve one’s situation(unaided)靠自己的努力提高自己的地位[改善自己的境况]
Janice lost her job but she pulled herself up by her bootstraps and started her own business.
詹纳斯失去了工作,但她靠自己的努力,改善了自己的境况,结果开办起了自己的商店。

put the boot in = further harm somebody who is already distressed or harmed<主英俚>(通常在对方已倒地后)再踢上一脚
His wife left him and then his firm put the boot in by making him redundant.
他妻子抛弃了他,接着他的公司落井下石,裁减了他。

the boot’s on the other foot = the other person now has the advantage情况正相反
At first he was quicker than me but I’ve been practicing and now the boot’s on the other foot.
开始他比我快,但是我不停地练习,现在情况正好相反。

to boot = also/in addition除此之外,而且
My new house has a garage, greenhouse and garden shed to boot.
我的新房子有一个车库,而且还有一间玻璃暖房和一间花园小屋。

bore somebody stiff/the pants off somebody/somebody to tears = be very boring使某人厌烦极了
I had to sit through three hours of Welsh folk singing – I was bored stiff.
我不得不在威尔士民间演唱会连坐3个小时-我厌烦到了极点。

born
be born before one’s time = anticipate later ideas/opinions(思想)比同时代的人先进;跑在时代前头
Leonardo designed flying machines before anyone had invented engines to power them; he was born before his time.
伦纳德再有人发明引擎作动力之前就设计了飞行器,他跑在了时代的前头。

She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and has never had to do a day’s hard work in her life.
她出生在富贵人家,一生中从来没有做过一天的苦活。

in all one’s born days = ever一生
In all my born days I’ve never seen a dog with green eyes.
我一生中从未见过绿眼睛的狗。

Don't try to tell me that’s the way to Brighton; I wasn't born yesterday, you know.

borrow
borrowed plumes = inappropriate or unofficially used symbols of position/status
靠别人得来的声誉;假门面;虚架子
He wore his brother’s evening dress to the function but looked very uncomfortable in his borrowed plumes instead of his usual jeans and tee shirt.
他穿着他兄弟的夜礼服去参加盛大的集会,但是穿着向别人借来装门面的漂亮衣服看上去很不舒服,还不如他平时穿的牛仔裤和T恤衫好。

She’s been terminally ill for several months and I’m afraid she’s only living on borrowed time.

bosom friend/pal = very close friend 知心朋友
Bill and Ben always go round together-they’ve been bosom pals all their lives.

He’s twenty-one yet still lives in the bosom of his family.

be unable to have something both ways = be unable to make two (equally attractive) choices when only one is actually possible 不能同时两者兼得
You want to go to the pictures with Edna and at the same time stay at home and watch football on television; well, you can’t have it both ways.

It was a dubious deal and I might got away with it if I hadn’t tried to play both ends against the middle.

be on the bottle = be a regular drinker沉溺于酒
Jack’s been on the bottle ever since he came back from working abroad.

bottle up = hold in (emotions/feelings)抑制(感情、怒气、怨气)
In spite of the cruel things she said to him, he bottled up his feelings and displayed no emotion at all.
尽管她对他说的是些令人痛苦的事情,但是他抑制住了自己的感情,表现得很冷漠。

hit the bottle = drink excessively<俚>酗酒
After Wendy’s husband left her she began to hit the bottle.
文迪的丈夫抛弃她后,她开始酗酒了。
